Irish Barmbrack



-A gold ring, to foretell marriage within a year.

-A small coin, to forecast wealth.

-A small piece of cloth, to forecast poverty.

-A small piece matchstick, to forecast the husband will beat his wife.

-A thimble, to forecast spinsterhood.

-A button, to forecast bachelorhood.


Place the tea and the currants, raisins, lemon peel, orange peel and candied fruits in a bowl and let it soak overnight.

In a large bowl, mix the flour, yeast, sugar, salt, ground allspice, ground cinnamon, ground cloves and ground nutmeg. Mix to combine.

Melt the butter, add it to the milk. Add the eggs to the flour mixture and mix until well combined.

Add the milk mixture, little by little to the flour mixture, mixing until well combined.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 minutes, gradually adding the fruits mixture (previously drained).

Knead until all the ingredients are good combined and place in a greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 2 hours.

Wrap each lucky item carefully in greaseproof tissue paper.

Punch the dough down. Stir in the warpped lucky items and distribute them evenly

 Shape into a round loaf and place in a lined baking tray.

Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 hour.

Bake in a previously pre-heated oven at 180° C for 50 minutes.

Brush the loaf with melted butter and transfer to a wire rack to cool down.
